It's inevitable. At some point, you're going to spill something on your carpet. Whether it's red wine, coffee, or just plain dirt, sooner or later you'll need to know how to clean it up. In this article, we will provide a list of the best ways to remove stains from different types of fabrics. We'll also give you some tips on how to prevent these stains from happening in the first place!

How often should you clean your carpets?

This depends on a variety of factors, such as how often you stain your carpet and the type of fabric your carpets are made from. However, the golden rule to maintain your carpet's cleanliness is to vacuum twice a week and have your carpet professionally cleaned once a year.

If your carpet is in a high-traffic area ( a room that is used frequently), it is recommended vacuuming your carpet anywhere between three and seven times a week, and getting it deep cleaned every three to six months. For big stains like red wine, or makeup you should clean immediately.

This is only a recommendation, not everyone has time during the week to break out the vacuum. There are factors, however, that contribute to the frequency of needing to do a carpet cleaning:

  • Are there kids in the house?
  • Are there pets in the house?
  • Do you wear shoes in the house?
  • Does someone in the house smoke?
  • Does someone have asthma or respiratory issues?

These are just some reasons you may want to clean your carpet sooner rather than later. You'd be surprised at how dirty a carpet can get in a house with children or pet. Having a dirty carpet can really affect the cleanliness of the space, and even the health of the people living in the household.

Let's get into how to clean your carpets, depending on the materials it is made out of.

Cleaning Cotton Carpets

Cotton carpets are tricky to clean, with its natural fibers clinging to the more thicker substances that fall on it. Do not immediately scrub the carpet; this may only push the stain further into the fabric.

Instead, remove any excess solid material on the surface of the stain. Blot (do not scrub) the stained area with a clean cloth or towel until no more color is transferred from the carpet to the cloth.

Create your own quick cleaning solution. Usually, this is a tablespoon of laundry detergent and one cup water to start you off cleaning the spot. Make sure you still dab with this solution and avoid scrubbing. You may have to do this in cycles until the stain is completely removed.

If the stain persists, you may have to resort to the big guns. A carpet friendly steam cleaner, or hiring a professional carpet cleaning service may do the job, but the price may not be worth it.

Jute Rugs are a Breeze to Clean

Jute rugs are a breeze to clean, as they are stain-resistant and can be vacuumed or swept. If you do happen to spill something on your jute rug, just blot the stain with a cloth and it will come right off!

If there is a heavier stain, mix up a concoction of 50/50 water and white vinegar, or dilute laundry detergent with water and spray that on. Using a clean damp cloth, clean quickly so it won't stain the material.

Synthetic Carpets need Special Attention

Synthetic carpets require special attention when it comes to cleaning, as many of the stain removers you have around your house can damage the delicate fibers.

For lighter stains, use laundry detergent diluted with water and gently blot the stain. For heavier stains, mix hydrogen peroxide with baking soda to form a paste, apply to stain and let it sit for about 30 minutes before rinsing off.

If all else fails, take your synthetic carpet to a professional cleaner; they will be able to remove even the most stubborn of stains.

If carpets are small enough to fit into your washing machine, that could help you out. Read the instructions for washing your carpet, usually found on the tag. If there are no instructions, a general rule of thumb would be to wash on a gentle cycle with cold water and detergent.

For large carpets, or carpets that are not machine-washable, you may need to buy a handy carpet cleaner. You can either rent one from your local hardware store, or hire a professional service.

Whichever route you decide to take, make sure to test an inconspicuous area of the carpet before starting on any stain so as not to damage the fabric further.

How to prevent the stains?

There are a few ways to prevent stains from happening in the first place.

  • Try and keep as much dirt and dust off of your carpet as possible by regularly vacuuming it.
  • If you have kids or pets, try and train them not to walk on the carpets with their shoes on.
  • When eating in the living room or dining room, put down a placemat or tray to catch any food that may fall.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents near your carpets; these can stain or bleach the material over time.

Follow these tips and your carpets should be kept stain free for years to come!
